After two years of preparation and development, Leipzig University Library put the open source Library Service Platform FOLIO into operation on June 11 2020. We have thus reached a further milestone in the use of open source software. From now on our electronic resources (i.e. e-journals, e-books and databases) will be managed with this innovative, self-hosted software. This makes us the second German library and the fifth library worldwide to use this future-oriented platform productively. Instances for other Saxon university libraries will be added in the course of the year.
FOLIO is a next generation Library Service Platform, characterized by a service-oriented software architecture, the use of APIs and other modern features. As the only open source platform, FOLIO allows both in-house development and the use of free or commercial applications. Libraries, library service providers and software companies worldwide work together to develop functionalities for both traditional and future-oriented library services. The Leipzig University Library has actively contributed to the functional range of FOLIO with the eUsage-App, an application that enables libraries to efficiently manage usage statistics on electronic resources.
